Mikko Rantanen fined by NHL

The National Hockey League announced on Thursday afternoon that Colorado Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen has been fined $2,000 for embellishment/diving during Wednesday night's game against the San Jose Sharks.

"Rantanen was issued a Warning following an incident flagged by NHL Hockey Operations during NHL Game No. 508 against the Arizona Coyotes on March 23. His second Citation, which triggered the $2,000 fine, was issued for an incident at 7:21 of the second period during NHL Game No. 793 against the San Jose Sharks on April 30. Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro received a minor penalty for tripping on the play," the NHL said in a statement.


Under the NHL's Rule 64, a player is fined if they have more than one instance of embellishment/diving during the course of a season. The second offense is $2,000, third is $3,000, fourth is $4,000, fifth and beyond is $5,000. After more than four instances in a season, a the team's head coach will also recive a fine of anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000 depending on how many times a player dives.

In 47 games this season, the Nousiainen, Finland native has 59 points (29 G, 30 A), 30 penalty minutes, and is a +25.
