SOME FLYERS REPORTEDLY UNHAPPY WITH PLAYING UNDER ALAIN VIGNEAULT

MAY 3, 2021  (13H28)      TIM TUCKER
With the team officially out of playoff contention, the Philadelphia Flyers are now playing for pride and not much else. Two seasons ago, the Flyers brought in head Alain Vigneault to replace interim bench boss Scott Gordon. It seemed to work in the first season as the team went to the playoffs and made it to the third round before being eliminated. This season is completely different, and there are plenty of rumours that Vigneault is on his way out the door over the summer. Now comes word that some Philadelphia players aren't too happy with him.

"Some of the Flyers are not happy with Vigneault's public criticism of them, according to a source connected to the players," write Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Sam Carchidi.

Publicly criticizing players is nothing new for Vigneault. He's done it his entire career and did it last year with the Flyers as well. For whatever reason, it seems the players have had enough.

"But Vigneault was critical of them last year, too, and they responded with much more energy than this group," added Carchidi.

Vigneault was recently asked what he felt changed between last year and this one. His response was very cryptic.

"Some guys, for different reasons, haven't been able to get their game to where it needs to be," he said. "I have an idea for the reason behind it. I'm not willing to share it at this time. At the end of the year, we'll talk [about it]."

Philadelphia did go through an outbreak of COVID-19 that shut the team down for some time. Whether players are still feeling the impacts of the disease is unknown, but it's very likely when listening to others that have been unlucky enough to get it. The shortened, condensed season seems to have hit pretty much every player in some way.
