HOCKEY CANADA ADDS FIRST PLAYER TO 2021 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ROSTER

MAY 3, 2021  (12H43)      COOPER GODIN
The Ottawa Senators were eliminated from Stanley Cup playoff contention on Saturday night following an overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens. Many players have begun to shift their focus to the off-season and next season except for forward Connor Brown.

On Monday, Brown said that Team Canada's management group led by Roberto Luongo reached out about having him on their roster for the 2021 IIHF World Hockey Championship in Riga, Latvia later this month. Brown said that he would love to play for his country at the World Championship and as of Monday afternoon, is the only known player to have accepted an invitation to play for Canada at the tournament.

Brown, 27, has had a fairly good year with the Senators. In 51 games this season, he's tallied 28 points (17 G, 11 A), 12 penalty minutes, and is a -5.

The Etobicoke, Ontario native has never represented Canada at any level, so it must feel pretty special for him to wear the red and white when Canada takes to the ice for their first game of the tournament on May 21st against Latvia.

Hockey Canada has also reached out to Senators forward Drake Batherson. Batherson said he definitely has interest in playing at the tournament, but did not say if he had officially confirmed his participation.

Batherson, 23, is having a breakout year with the Sens. In 51 games, he has 32 points (17 G, 15 A), 6 penalty minutes, and is a -16.

He's represented Canada once so far in his career, at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships. In 7 games, Batherson tallied 7 points (7 G), 4 penalty minutes, and was a +2 helping Canada bring home the gold medal.
