MCDAVID NOT GETTING CAUGHT UP IN THE 100-POINT HYPE, REMAINS FOCUSED ON PLAYING THE RIGHT WAY

MAY 2, 2021  (17H00)      MIKE ARMENTI
While it certainly would be a spectacle to behold if generational talent Connor McDavid reaches 100 points in just 56 games this season, it appears as though he is not nearly as interested in the unbelievable feat as the rest of us are.

On Sunday, McDavid told Tim Campbell of NHL.com that his main priority right now is not to reach 100 points, but just to continue to compete and try to win hockey games in the final stretch of the regular season.

"Personally, I want to continue to play good hockey. Our group wants to continue to play good hockey. We want to go into the (Stanley Cup) Playoffs on a good note," said the Oilers' captain, who views 100 points as just a number.

Though he admits that it would be cool to reach that mark in a 56-game season, he certainly isn't going out of his way to make it happen by abandoning what has made the Oilers so successful this season in favor of playing a more selfish style.

"Obviously, it would be kind of different to be able to do it in a shortened season. I'm not going to change anything. I'm just going to keep playing my game, and if I get there, I get there. And if not, whatever."

At this point, there is nobody who is going to catch McDavid in the Art Ross Trophy race (87 pts), as his only competition is teammate Leon Draisaitl (71 pts), who is trailing his captain by 16. However, McDavid may have some competition in the Hart Trophy race, as fellow North Division standout Auston Matthews is creating quite the stir, having scored 38 goals in just 47 games this season. This really is just a two-horse race here, as it is McDavid, Matthews, Chris Johnston's 42.2km run and then possibly Patrick Kane or Nathan MacKinnon way, way down the line. Of course, many are of the mindset that McDavid has already locked up the Hart as well.

Just for those keeping count, McDavid has just 7 games remaining to collect himself 13 points to become the first player to reach 100 points in 56 games since Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr, who each did so during the 1995-96 season.
