THE HOLD-UP IN THE ROD BRIND'AMOUR EXTENSION IN CAROLINA HAS FINALLY BEEN REVEALED

MAY 1, 2021  (23H35)      MIKE ARMENTI
The NHL's top dogs, the Carolina Hurricanes, hold a 34-10-7 record this season and a big reason for the club's success this year, as well as over the past few seasons has been the leadership of head coach Rod Brind'Amour - who is currently, among many others in the organization, on an expiring contract.

Though talks have been ongoing, the two sides have yet to come to an agreement on an extension, despite vocal interest from both sides in getting a deal done.

During Saturday's edition of Hockey Night in Canada, but more specifically on the Headlines section of the program, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman shed some light on what the hold-up was in the negotiations. Apparently Brind'Amour wants his people taken care of prior to signing on the dotted line.

"I understand that one of the biggest issues there is that Brind'Amour has asked that as much as he wants himself to get a contract extension, he also wants extensions for his coaching staff, the training staff and the equipment staff, which also are not signed for next year," Friedman began. "And he said as much as a priority as his contract is, that is also an enormous priority for [Brind'Amour]. So what he is telling the organization is that he wants a situation where they are taken care of as well.

"I think the betting is he's going to stay in Carolina, but he's made it very clear the future of the staff around him is as important as his own future," Friedman concluded.

You have to admire the 50-year-old's willingness to stick his neck out there for his colleagues and friends in order to help them get deals done as well. That sort of loyalty and respect is a big reason why Brind'Amour is revered in Raleigh and why ownership is so dedicated to bringing back the former Stanley Cup champion and two-time Frank J. Selke Trophy winner. After his impressive run with the Canes this season, he may be adding a Jack Adams Trophy to his trophy case as well.

Brind'Amour has been the bench boss in Carolina since 2018-19 and has amassed a very impressive 117-64-19 record during his tenure with the Canes.
