CHILD BATTLING CANCER GETS TO MEET HIS HOCKEY HERO

MAY 2, 2021  (0H09)      COLTON PANKIW
An 11-year-old Winnipeg boy named Dian Green, who is battling cancer, was able to virtually meet his hockey hero, Sidney Crosby.

Green's mother, Rachel, made the Pittsburgh Penguins superstar a matching version of her son's Penguins medallion, which Crosby happily wore.

«Just to see my son's hockey idol wearing a medallion that matches my son's medallion that I beaded, it's something to be very proud of,» said Rachel.

Earlier in April, she and her son were able to virtually meet Crosby thanks to The Dream Factory, a program that grants wishes of Manitoba children with life-threatening illnesses.

«He's always been a fan of Sidney Crosby since he was a baby,» said Rachel.

At just two years old, her son Dian was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare type of cancer, and was treated with chemotherapy and radiation. At six, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Thankfully, his younger brother was a match for a bone marrow transplant which was a success.

However, this past November, Dian was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer, and has been in treatment since. The chat with Crosby was a nice moment in what has been a very tough time for Dian and his mother.

«We kept the news from him until the morning of the interview,» Rachel said. «We told Dian that it was about to happen and we just wanted to keep it a big surprise. And he was just so amazed, like he couldn't believe that it was going to happen. He was so nervous, so shy.»

This is a very heart warming story and a very nice gesture from Crosby, who has always done quiet behind the scenes things like this with fans since coming into the league. Our thoughts and prayers are with Dian and his family as he continues to go through his treatment.
