RED WINGS ANNOUNCE THAT TWO KEY PLAYERS WILL MISS THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON

APR 22, 2021  (11H47)      MIKE ARMENTI
The Detroit Red Wings may not be contending for a playoff spot, but that does not mean that they won't feel the sting of missing some key players in the lineup for the remainder of the season.

On Thursday, the Red Wings announced via their official Twitter account that they will be without the services of Frans Nielsen and Tyler Bertuzzi for the rest of the 2020-21 season.

Neilsen, 36, has suited up in 29 contests for the Wings this season and is a veteran leader in the room. The 925-game NHL veteran has seen a significant drop off in his production over the past two seasons, registering just 15 points over the course of his last 79 games.

The former 3rd-round pick in 2002 (87th overall, by the New York Islanders) has surpassed the 30-point plateau in 10 of his 15 NHL seasons, exceeding the 40-point barrier 4 times and the 50-point mark twice.

Bertuzzi, 26, has been limited to just 9 games with the Wings this season, tallying 7 points, including 5 goals over that span before exiting a game against the Florida Panthers on January 30th with an upper-body injury.

With Detroit well out if the playoff race, they are not taking any chances with the former 2nd-round pick (58th in 2013), opting to take a cautious approach to ensure that Bertuzzi returns at 100% in the fall.

The Sudbury, Ontario native has tallied 54 goals and 126 points through 208 career NHL games, all with the Red Wings.

In addition, the team announced that captain Dylan Larkin is out of the lineup for Thursday night's game after suffering an upper-body injury on Tuesday evening.

Larkin is scheduled to be evaluated on Friday with an update on his status likely to be available later in the day.
