PANARIN BEING CRITICIZED IN RUSSIA FOR REPORTEDLY REFUSING TO PLAY AT THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

APR 22, 2021  (10H08)      TIM TUCKER
The relationship between New York Rangers star Artemi Panarin and his home country of Russia is a rocky one, and seems to be deteriorating even more. For days now, Russian media outlets have been reporting that Panarin was offered a spot on Russia's national team for the World Hockey Championships beginning May 21st in Riga, Latvia. Panarin has apparently refused that offer, whether the Rangers make the playoffs of not. That isn't sitting well with many of his fellow Russians, including Vladimir Plyuschev, a former head coach of Russia's national team.

"The Russian national team should include people who love, respect and value their country. And most importantly, they are true to all their principles. I think that Artemi's brain is a little different. He is not yet American, but I think that he is no longer Russian either," Plyuschev said.

"Everything that he voiced on the Internet and in the press is probably not very attractive to a person who will defend the colors of the Russian flag with full dignity. No one denies that Panarin is a talented player. But the question is about the Russian national team, where people should perform, who can put even a piece of their health on the altar of the Fatherland," Plyuschev continued.

Panarin has been very vocal in his criticism of Russia's President Vladimir Putin in social media and in interviews with Russian media outlets. There was also the incident earlier this year where former NHLer Andrei Nazarov, who coached Panarin in the KHL, alleged that the Rangers' sniper beat up a girl at a bar when she refused to have sex with him back in 2011. Panarin denied the allegations and no ever ever came forward to corroborate Nazarov's statement. In fact, there were several who said it never happened or it was blown out of proportion by Nazarov. Still Plyushchev, and may others, feel Panarin should be willing to play for his country.

"To fly the national flag and not respect the past of your state is nonsense. Hockey is war! Fight against other federations, affirm your way of life, your history and culture. It has always been that way. It will always be that way," said Plyuschev.

Plyuschev told told Sportsdaily.ru that Panarin has already informed the Russian National Team that he will not play for them. The last time he did was 2017.
