NHL RESPONDS TO ROBIN LEHNER AND COMPLETELY CONTRADICTS HIS STATEMENT ON VACCINES AND PROTOCOLS

APR 21, 2021  (16H35)      TIM TUCKER
The NHL is saying it made no promises to relax regulations for teams that had been vaccinated, a response to Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Robin Lehner. Earlier Wednesday, Lehner was upset during a news conference saying the league promised players who had been vaccinated wouldn't have to follow so many restrictions. The NHL contends it said no such thing.

"Nobody from the league has communicated to any player or club that any of our COVID protocols would be 'relaxed' for any player once he is vaccinated," said the NHL in a statement. "On the contrary, we have recently reiterated that it is essential to remain vigilant as we head into the final stretch of the regular season and approach the Stanley Cup Playoffs."

Lehner said during his comments that his main concern was the mental health of players.

"We are vaccinated and we are still trapped in a prison. Being lied to about things changing, to kind of force us to take the vaccine. It's unacceptable. Now that we've taken the vaccine, to have the excuse to say, ‘Nah, we're not changing because of competitive advantage,' it's outrageous," said Lehner.

Both the NBA and MLB have a policy in place that states the leagues would ease restrictions on team gatherings and quarantines if 85% of the team's players and staff are vaccinated. Lehner said he was told a similar policy would come to the NHL, but nothing has been set up yet.

"That was a lie. A blatant lie," said a clearly frustrated Lehner.

"You look at schools, you look at kids' mental health, for Christ's sakes, you see 10, 11, 12 year olds talking about suicide, committing suicide. The mental health aspect (of COVID) will be shown over the next 3 to 5 years. People develop things during isolation like this."
