ROBIN LEHNER BASHES NHL'S COVID-19 VACCINE POLICY

APR 21, 2021  (15H40)      BRENNEN BEAUDIN
Vegas Golden Knights goalie Robin Lehner recently expressed his opinion on the NHL's COVID-19 vaccine policy. To say he was upset would be an understatement.

«It was a lie to our face,» Lehner said regarding the vaccine policy.

The NHL apparently made promises to teams that received the vaccine, that the restrictions would lighten up, but those promises were not kept. The league is continuing to survey teams to see who has received or not received the vaccine, but the league seems more concerned about teams having a «competitive edge» if certain teams get the vaccine and others don't.

Lehner has struggled with mental health problems for most of his career, and he believes that these lies are not helping anyone's mental health.

«We are vaccinated and we are still trapped in a prison. Being lied to about things changing, to kind of force us to take the vaccineunacceptable. Now that we've taken the vaccine, to have the excuse to say, ‘Nah, we're not changing because of competitive advantage,' it's outrageous.»

The 29-year-old has Bipolar One, and says the hardest thing for him is the isolation. He thought there was going to be light at the end of the tunnel, but the NHL «pulled the rug» from under teams who have been vaccinated.

Both the NBA and MLB have a policy in order that if 85% of the players and staff are vaccinated, the leagues would ease restrictions on gatherings and quarantines. Lehner was told a similar policy would come to light in the NHL, but nothing has been set up yet.

«That was a lie. A blatant lie.»

Lehner also went on to say how the mental aspect of COVID-19 is affecting not just adults, but also children.

«You look at schools, you look at kids' mental health, for Christ's sakes, you see 10, 11, 12 year olds talking about suicide, committing suicide. The mental health aspect (of COVID) will be shown over the next 3 to 5 years People develop things during isolation like this."

Obviously, the virus has affected everyone worldwide, and it is not something that people have been able to deal with easily. The constant fear of the virus or contracting and giving it to loved ones has made it tough for people to carry on with their normal lives.

The Vegas netminder is frustrated like many people in the world, and he went to Twitter to explain his outburst to the media this morning.

Lehner definitely did not want to offend anyone, but it seems that he accomplished getting his point across. The NHL needs to follow through on their promises in order to keep people's well-being above competitive edge.
