NHL REACHES SETTLEMENT REGARDING DECEASED FORMER NHL PLAYER TODD EWEN

APR 21, 2021  (11H42)      COLTON PANKIW
From a story written up by TSN's Rick Westhead, the NHL has reached a settlement «in principle» with Kelli Ewen, the widow of deceased former NHL player Todd Ewen.

Ewen filed a wrongful death claim against the NHL in April 2019, saying Todd's suicide in 2015 was linked to the league allegedly downplaying the potential long-term consequences of repeated brain trauma and profiting from a culture of on-ice violence. The lawsuit said she was seeking «compensatory damages and all other damages permitted by law.» She confirmed in a text to TSN that a settlement had been made but did not elaborate further.

Todd's case has helped play a key role in the debate that has come up more so in recent years regarding chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and concussions in hockey. Ewen says he battled depression, anxiety, and memory loss for the last 20 years of his life. By the time he retired from the NHL in 1996-97, he had racked up 1911 penalty minutes in 518 career games.

League commissioner Gary Bettman argued that the brain-withering disease was inconclusive and that Todd killed himself because the media hype caused him to believe he had the disease. However, in February 2018, scientist Dr. Ann McKee from Boston University announced that she had found Stage 2 CTE in Todd's brain. Todd tragically passed away on September 19, 2015 at the age of 49, choosing to kill himself in his family's basement in St. Louis.
