FOLIGNO'S STOP IN TORONTO LIKELY SHORT-LIVED; WHERE HE MIGHT BE HEADED NEXT SEASON

APR 21, 2021  (12H33)      BRENNEN BEAUDIN
While the addition of Nick Foligno for the Toronto Maple Leafs is great for both the player and the team, it seems very likely that the 33-year-old will rejoin the Leafs for the 2021-22 season.

The Athletic's Aaron Portzline reports that Foligno will likely just be a rental for this season, considering Toronto's cap trouble heading into next season. The huge contracts of Mitch Marner, Auston Matthews, and John Tavares hinder the team's ability to sign other depth players for basically anything besides the veteran minimum, take «Jumbo» Joe Thornton and Jason Spezza for example.

Foligno has two realistic landing spots for this offseason, one is returning to the Columbus Blue Jackets where he had played all of his career up to being traded to the Leafs, or sign with the Minnesota Wild to join his brother, Marcus, on an exciting, up and coming team.

Portzline states that «Foligno has spoken openly through the years about his desire to one day play with his brother, Marcus, a winger for the Minnesota Wild. The Folignos are an incredibly close family.»

On top of this, it was reported that the Wild were already interested in the veteran forward during the trade deadline, but they did not want to match the price that the Maple Leafs paid to acquire him, especially since Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin is building for the future.

If Foligno does indeed get offers from both Columbus and Minnesota, he will have a very tough decision to make. Either play with his brother, which is very hard to pass up, or return to his family's home city in Columbus.
