HOCKEY CANADA TO BEGIN ROSTER PREPARATIONS LATER THIS WEEK FOR 2021 WORLDS

APR 21, 2021  (12H37)      COOPER GODIN
The 2021 IIHF World Hockey Championships begin in exactly one month (May 21st) in Riga, Latvia, and yesterday, Hockey Canada announced that Roberto Luongo would be the general manager, and Shane Doan would be the assistant general manager for the three-week tournament.

On Tuesday's edition of Insider Trading, Darren Dreger was asked what Team Canada's roster may look like for the upcoming event.

"It's going to be a young team primarily, James. Roberto Luongo and his assistant general manager Shane Doan, they definitely are going to have their work cut out for them. They're looking at perhaps some Olympic hopefuls. If you look in net for Team Canada, perhaps you see Carter Hart or you see Mackenzie Blackwood. I mean they'll get an opportunity if they accept. Thomas Chabot defensively would be a great add for Team Canada. And up front, Bo Horvat has had a lot going on with the Vancouver Canucks, maybe he wants some international flavour mixed in to his year. And then you got guys who because of the shortened NHL season just want to extend their playing time. Like Dillon Dube, Andrew Mangiapane, Ty Smith, Gabriel Vilardi, Dylan Cozens. These are interesting names and I expect Hockey Canada will try to get this first wave of those who have accepted out perhaps as early as the end of the week," Dreger said.

Canada will be in Group B for the 2021 World Championship and will face Latvia (May 21st at 1:15pm ET), the United States (May 23rd at 1:15pm ET), Germany (May 24th at 1:15pm ET), Norway (May 26th at 1:15pm ET), Kazakhstan (May 28th at 9:15am ET), Italy (May 30th at 9:15am ET), and Finland (June 1st at 5:15am ET).
