MR. HOCKEY, GORDIE HOWE'S SON MURRAY SPEAKS TO PATRICK MARLEAU'S PURSUIT OF HIS DAD'S RECORD

APR 18, 2021  (11H12)      MIKE ARMENTI
San Jose Sharks forward Patrick Marleau did the unthinkable on Saturday night against the Minnesota Wild when he moved into a tie with Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe for most NHL games played with 1,767. When the Sharks travel to Las Vegas to take on the Golden Knights on Monday, assuming he plays (and why wouldn't he?) Marleau will become the NHL's all-time leader for games played, snapping a record that has lasted over 40 years and was thought to be out of reach for a long time.

First of all, congratulations to Patty Marleau and his family. Not only is it a massive individual achievement, but it also speaks to the wonderful support system that he has around him. Any hockey player who gets anywhere in terms of massive individual honors will be the first to give thanks to those around him, who have helped get him there and supported him along the way.

That said, there's another side of this story that deserves some attention. The Howe family is essentially among those considered to be hockey royalty, so when a record such as Mr. Hockey's is challenged, you tend to wonder how a longstanding record being broken is viewed by the late NHLer's family.

Well, first and foremost, Howe's legacy is certainly cemented in hockey history, without a doubt. He will always and forever be one of the absolute best to ever step foot on the ice and there is nothing anyone could do or say to take that away from Gordie and his family. That said, Howe always said that records were meant to be broken, and according to his son, Murray, Howe would be among those cheering for Marleau the hardest, were he still with us.

"I think he'd be very thrilled and the first out on the ice to applaud Patrick on this really incredible milestone," Murray Howe said on Saturday.

"[Marleau] is a class act," he continued. "Just in the same way that Gretzky broke Dad's scoring records, it was great to see it accomplished by someone who was humble and dedicated to the game and grateful for the things that he had."

Though it is likely that it will be a very long time before Marleau's record is ever broken, if, in fact, it ever is.. he is certainly the type of player to have the same feelings toward his record as Howe had toward his. You can bet that Marleau will take great pride in cheering for someone from the next generation who may be in pursuit of his record someday. Like Mr. Hockey before him, it's just the type of guy that Marleau is.

What a special treat it is to be a hockey fan in this era, watching one of hockey's absolute best in Patrick Marleau make history.
