U.S. REVERSES DECISION TO BLOCK RUSSIA'S U18 CAPTAIN FROM PARTICIPATING AT TOURNAMENT IN TEXAS

APR 18, 2021  (10H52)      TIM TUCKER
Ivan Miroshnichenko will be allowed to participate in the U18 World Hockey Championships taking place in Texas after all. The captain of Russia's U18 team initially received a letter from U.S. Immigration Services saying he would not be allowed to enter the country on the 19th of April, even though he had a visa in place.

"The Russian Ice Hockey Federation held consultations with the International Ice Hockey Federation, USA Hockey and the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee. The result of the coordinated work of the organizations was the issuance of a special permit to the athlete for a single entry to the United States for a period of 30 days to participate in a prestigious tournament (NIE - national interest exception waiver). FHR thanks its international partners for their timely assistance in matters of interaction with US government agencies," reads a statement on the FHR's official website.

There was no reason given as to why Miroshnichenko was blocked in the first place, nor was an explanation offered on why the decision was reversed.

"It is clear that I am not a terrorist," said Miroshnichenko in an interview when he first received the letter from U.S authorities saying he would not be able to participate in the tournament. "I can't even imagine what it is. I just went nuts, three days before departure they send this."

Something is wrong there, I don't know, that's all," he continued. "I've already been to America, trained there a couple of years ago, traveled on a tourist visa. I don't even know what could have happened."

Miroshnichenko was also denied entry into Canada previously after deciding to do some training in North America. Again, no reason was made public. The U18 World Championship will take place from April 26 to May 6 in Frisco and Plano, Texas.
