HOCKEY REPORTERS SAY CANUCKS ARE VIOLATING NHL MEDIA REGULATIONS

APR 17, 2021  (18H55)      TIM TUCKER
The Vancouver chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association is blasting the Canucks for not allowing reporters into team practices.

"For three days, the Vancouver Canucks have been in violation of the National Hockey League's media regulations, which are codified in the collective bargaining agreement between the League and its players," said the PWHA in a statement.

"Simply put, when a team practices, media are to be allowed access to view practices," the statement continued.

"The Canucks have not been allowing media to view practices, claiming privacy concerns, also suggesting that media would not be taking into consideration the difficultly the teams players might be having in recovering from COVID-19, which recently infected nearly every player on the team"

"Such an implication is insulting," said the PWHA. "Especially given Vancouver media were united in its criticism of the return to play schedule the league was asking the team to undertake..."

The Canucks have not addressed this situation publicly. There are some rumblings that even players that have recovered are still feeling the impact of the illness, while GM Jim Benning recently said there's a good possibility that Elias Pettersson may not return at all this season as he deals with the after effects of COVID-19.

The PWHA argues that a reporter's presence at practice was a key factor in ensuring the story of the team's outbreak was told accurately from the beginning. It is requesting the league step in to allow reporters back at Canucks' practice immediately.
