POSSIBLE TIMELINE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF JERSEY ADS IN THE NHL REVEALED

APR 17, 2021  (17H39)      MIKE ARMENTI
It was long thought to be unlikely that the National Hockey League would ever venture down the path of uniform advertisements, but as we've seen in 2020-21 with the introduction of helmet ads, you should never say never.

Granted, the helmet ads were a great way for the NHL to make up a portion of lost revenues due to COVID-19 preventing the majority of NHL clubs from being able to have fans in attendance, but how likely is it, really, that we eventually see jersey ads popping up?

According to Sports Business Journal, several sources have indicated that jersey ads are not only currently being discussed, but could arrive in the NHL as early as the 2022-23 season. SBJ did, however, also comment that the deal has not yet been approved by the NHL's Board of Governors, nor has any plan been finalized.

NHL teams have already begun doing market research to determine what a jersey patch and helmet decal would be valued at. The possible locations of the jersey patches are still being mulled over. Sizing is also yet to be determined.

Commissioner Gary Bettman stated back in March that it is very likely that helmet decals remain past this season, despite originally thought to be a temporary situation. After these sponsorship deals yielded in excess of $100M for NHL clubs, it only makes sense that the league would look to continue these partnerships. A part of these revenues were also generated from virtual slot signage.

While there has been a lot of opposition to the idea expressed on social media by NHL fans, it is definitely worth pointing out that the higher the revenues are in the league, the more likely it becomes that a salary cap increase takes effect.
