J.T. MILLER BLASTS NHL'S DECISION TO HAVE THE TEAM RESUME PLAY ON FRIDAY

APR 14, 2021  (18H35)      BRENNEN BEAUDIN
Canucks forward J.T. Miller is blasting the NHL's decision for the Canucks to resume play on Friday, and with good reason. Vancouver has been out of action for the past 11 days, and it seems harsh to Miller to have a team that had 22 players test positive for COVID-19.

When Miller was asked about his status for Friday, he was blatantly honest with his reply.

«I don't feel ready at all. I was fortunate not to get sick but you feel for your teammates. I've kind of felt guilt here and there, and all I could think about was how do we all stay healthy out of all this. Just want to make sure everyone and their families stay healthy.»

Considering COVID-19 primarily attacks people's lungs, it is going to be very difficult for almost a full team infected with the virus to get back in shape in such little time.

«I haven't really thought about hockey much, but it's kind of crazy. I know everyone has a job to do but to expect our entire team to be ready to play in one practice and a pre-game skate is a bit hard to comprehend. Even for me sitting around and not doing much my lungs are screaming," said Miller, who never tested positive for the virus.

Of course it is very unfortunate for any team to be in a scenario like this, and it would make more sense to give the team a little more time in order to recover from the virus, since it was such a large portion of the team.

The NHL put out the COVID-19 protocols to protect the league's players, staff, and families. This definitely does not align in Miller's mind, but yet again in his perspective, he has good reason to think this way. The league is not thinking very clearly regarding their own protocols at this time.

"It's frustrating, we try to talk about our number one priority is our players' health and their families safety and it's impossible to achieve that with what we're being asked to do. What we're being asked to do is not going to be too safe, if you're asking me."

Miller, who is known to be a great guy in the locker room, is showcasing again how much he cares for the people that he plays with.

"This is nothing to do with hockey. To be brutally honest, we're going to need more time than this to come back and play hockey. Even the guys that didn't get it aren't ready,» Miller said regarding the NHL's decision.

There are people on the team that are struggling to breathe even performing simple tasks like walking up or down steps, so it seems likely the Canucks could be without some key players for a couple of games down the stretch.

«I hope people don't take this the wrong way, I'm a super competitive guy... but this isn't about hockey for our team. This is about the health and safety of our players, their family and their children. This isn't about making the playoffs.»

The Canucks haven't played a game since March 24, and are scheduled to play their final 19 games in 31 days. Which is a lot, even for a team full of world-class athletes. Vancouver is currently 6th in the NHL's North Division with a 16-18-3 record and are on the outside looking in for the postseason.
