PHILADELPHIA FLYERS TAKING MAJOR BACKLASH AFTER ANNOUNCING NEW CHARITABLE INITIATIVE

APR 14, 2021  (18H06)      TIM TUCKER
Not much is going right for the Philadelphia Flyers on the ice lately, and it seems that's spreading to off the ice as well. The team is taking major backlash from followers online after announcing a new initiative aimed at combating hunger in the city.

The Flyers announced online Wednesday that the team was making a contribution to Philabundance, a hunger relief organisation based in Philly. No one had a problem with that as it seems to be a very worthy cause. What many did take issue with was the fact that the Flyers were partnering with popular fast-food restaurant Chick-fil-A to ensure further donations keep coming in.

For anyone unfamiliar with the controversy around Chick-fil-A, the company and its owner have a history of donating money to groups considered anti-LGBTQ+ and pro conversion therapy. Conversion therapy is a practice that's been labelled "pseudo-science" that seeks to change sexual or gender-identification orientations through psychological, physical, or spiritual/religious interventions. Canada is discussing legislation that would ban conversion therapy in any form. Followers of the Flyers were quick to question why the team would partner with a restuarant that has a history of supporting these types of organizations.

These are just some of the responses questioning the Flyers decision to partner with Chick-fil-A while the NHL works hard to state that "Hockey is for Everyone", including members of the LGBTQ+ community. The team has not responded to any of the negative feedback.

Chick-fil-A did release a statement in 2019 saying it would no longer be donating money to organizations that support anti-LGBTQ+ causes. That included the Salvation Army and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, who have both taken stances against homosexuality and same-sex marriage.
