LEAFS ROOKIE NICK ROBERTSON ENTERS COVID-19 PROTOCOL AFTER MARLIES YIELD A POSITIVE TEST RESULT

APR 14, 2021  (17H53)      MIKE ARMENTI
Wednesday's announcement that the AHL's Toronto Marlies were forced to postpone several upcoming games has hit pretty close to home for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but more specifically rookie forward Nick Robertson, who is now in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol due to the timeline of his last appearance with the Marlies.

Robertson had only recently been called up to the big club, playing in just his 2nd and 3rd regular season NHL games on Monday and Tuesday prior to the AHL issuing its statement on the Marlies' situation and postponing a trio of upcoming games, two against the Laval Rocket and one against the Belleville Senators.

Robertson was added to the protocol list due to a member of the Marlies reportedly testing positive for the virus on Wednesday.

As we have seen in several instances around the NHL this season, the move is strictly precautionary, much like the situation that Leafs forward William Nylander finds himself it at the moment, where both players were exposed to others who have tested positive, rather than testing positive themselves.

In both cases, due to the timeline, neither Nylander, nor Robertson would have been at risk to transmit the virus had they contracted it in their interactions with individuals who had tested positive, so it's believed that Robertson's placement in COVID-19 protocol will not have any impact on the rest of the Leafs' lineup.

In Nylander's case, he has turned up several negative test results, and looks poised to return to the lineup later this week/weekend.

After the scary situation with the Vancouver Canucks earlier this month, where over 20 players, coaches and other team personnel had tested positive for a Brazilian variant of the virus, we can be sure that both the Maple Leafs organization and the NHL as a whole will not leave anything to chance and that every measure will be taken to avoid another catastrophic locker room outbreak.
