DUCHARME PREACHING PATIENCE WHEN IT COMES TO COLE CAUFIELD'S NHL DEBUT

APR 14, 2021  (7H40)      TIM TUCKER
With Montreal Canadiens prospect Cole Caufield getting four points (3 goals, 1 assists) in his first two games in the AHL, many fans are calling for his debut in the NHL to come sooner rather than later. However, Habs head coach Dominique Ducharme says fans will have to be patient and he's in no rush.

"He is a young player, and his talent, he will not lose it," replied Ducharme in French during a Q and A session with reporters. "I've never heard that a guy came too late in the NHL but I've heard that a youngster came too early in the league. We have already seen that. The important thing is that he can continue to progress."

Caufield won the Hobey Baker Award as the Top Men's Player in he NCAA just hours before making his pro debut with the Laval Rocket. He had an amazing 30 goals and 52 points in 31 games with Wisconsin this past season. Despite that, Ducharme said he's not taking any unnecessary risks with the young prospect.

"He is currently working with the Rocket, with Joël (Bouchard), and from there, Marc (Bergevin) and the organization, when we will feel that it is the moment, or that we are going to need him, whatever the reason, he will come with us," added Ducharme. "We'll see. But we want to prepare him for a long career in the NHL, we want to prepare him for success. There will be no rushing. Going from NCAA varsity hockey to the American League and the NHL takes steps. Patience is the key in a case like this."

After looking great in his first two games in Laval over the weekend, Caufield and the team got a bit of a break but will hit the ice again on Thursday against the Toronto Marlies.
